For properties that cannot receive cavity wall insulation an alternative is available. Solid wall insulation can dramatically reduce the amount of warmth that escapes from a property thereby reducing energy bills and creating a warmer home.
Properties built prior to 1920 will most likely have solid walls. These typically allow more heat to pass through than a standard cavity wall, but can still be insulated either on the outside or internally.
The cost of doing this will be higher than cavity wall insulation as it requires more materials and time, but properties installing solid wall insulation will see dramatically lower energy bills as a result and can benefit from insulation grants.
What is solid wall insulation?
Internal insulation is installed by fitting insulation boards to the internal wall, or by constructing a new wall filled with insulation material.
External insulation is installed by rendering the outside of the property or by fitting cladding where appropriate. A layer of insulation is fitted between this and the original wall of the property to prevent heat from escaping.
Generally, external wall insulation is less disruptive, does not reduce the floorspace of your property and can also provide a ‘face-lift’ for a property that required work to the outside wall.
How much does external wall insulation cost?
Grants are available to cover up to £4,000 of the cost for you
The cost of installing solid wall insulation will be far higher than cavity wall insulation, but results in a far more efficient home. Typical costs are around £5,000 – £10,000 depending of the size of the property and the method chosen (internal or external). Annual energy bill savings will be around £450 – £550.
Government grants can be received to cover up to £4,000 of the cost of installing solid wall insulation.
Uninsulated solid walls can lose even more heat than cavity walls. By installing external insulation your walls, you will reduce heat loss by around 45%, resulting in a saving of around £45 for every £100 currently spent to heat your home.
What are the benefits of solid wall insulation?
- Reduces heat loss by up to 45%
- Minimal disruption to the home
- No reduction to internal floor space
- Long term durability
- Can improve the appearance of the property
- Virtually maintenance free
Free solid wall insulation grants
The good news is that insulation grants are becoming more readily available for properties with solid walls to install external wall insulation. Up to £4,000 can be claimed depending on the size of the property. There are various factors used to calculate the grant you can claim and you do not need to be in receipt of benefits to qualify.
