Buying lower carbon products when shopping
The fact is that everything we buy nowadays has a carbon footprint. This results from the farming processes to produce our food, the manufacture of the packaging and the processing of the product, the transport to get the product to your local shop and even the energy used to heat and light your local supermarket.
Some companies now try their best to reduce their carbon footprint and in turn it will help you to reduce yours when you buy their products.
But how do you know which is a low carbon product?
What is the Carbon Reduction Label?
Products and brands which have made a commitment to reduce their carbon footprint are now signing up the the Carbon Reduction Label scheme.
This means that they are able to label their products to show they are serious about it. The scheme is still quite new but many big brands have signed up so far.
Businesses get the label if they have been verified by Carbon Trust Certification Limited. They ensure that the company in question is doing enough to allow them to display the carbon reduction label. The companies need to meet the PAS 2050 Standard which was developed by the Carbon Trust in 2007 and is used around the world to work out the carbon footprint of hundreds of companies.
This process takes into account all stages of the product development and production through to the eventual point of sale and disposal.
The company is also expected to commit to reducing their carbon footprint and the product must be regularly reassessed and will have the label removed if it fails to meet the required standards.
The label looks like a big black footprint and details the volume of greenhouse gases the product has emitted during its life cycle.
It will also show the types of greenhouse gas the product emits per serving. This allows the shopper to make a more informed choice when shopping and to actively compare products before making a purchase.
