How is it free?

The big six energy companies are set targets by the Government to reduce the level CO2 emitted by UK households. In order to acheive these targets they must provide funding for home insulation, as this is generally regarded as the easiest and most effective way to improve a property's energy efficiency.

Recently, energy companies have realised they will fall short of these targets and have now increased the funding they offer as a result. Whilst some energy companies will offer more funding than others (depending on how close they are to meeting their targets), the result is that many UK homes can now have insulation installed absolutely free.

Which option is right for me?

Typically, if your home was built between 1925 and 1995 it will have been constructed with a cavity wall, which can be filled with insulation material. Installing cavity wall insulation will be the most effective option in this situation. Your property will see a maximum saving when combined with loft insulation, helping to save around 40% off an average energy bill.

Properties built prior to 1925 can have solid wall insulation installed, however this is a more expensive option.

Loft insulation should be installed in every property, providing there is space to do so.

Where does the funding come from?

CERT, or Carbon Emissions Reduction Target, was launched in 2008 to ensure the UK meets its statutory carbon reduction targets. It aims to cut carbon emissions by ensuring that every household in the UK is as energy efficient as possible. By helping home owners insulate their loft or cavity walls through grants, the energy saved will help the Government reduce overall carbon emissions for the UK, in line with European targets.

Funding for the scheme is provided by UK Energy Suppliers with more than 50,000 customers (domestic households), these are British Gas, NPower, E.ON, EDF, Scottish Power and Scottish & Southern Energy.
