Up until now, unlike ground source heat pumps, the installation of air source heat pumps has required planning permission, but that requirement has now come to an end.

As from 1st December, air source heat pumps will be classed as a permitted development alongside solar PV and solar thermal panels and biomass boilers. However, this is on the condition that there is no wind turbine installed at the property, that the building is not situated in a conservation area or listed, the unit is more than 1 metre from the edge of the property and it is not located on a pitch roof or near the edge of a flat roof.
